The Brong-Ahafo Regional Office of the Ghana Standard Authority (GSA) will soon undertake an enforcement exercise to clamp down on uncertified sachet water producers in the Region, as Ghana celebrates the World Metrology Day.

The World Metrology Day, which falls on May 20, every year, is observed in about 80 countries, to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875.

This treaty, according Mr Charles Annor Darko, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Officer of the GSA, provides the basis for a coherent measurement system worldwide.

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that sachet water producing companies which did not meet operational requirements of the Authority, would be closed down, adding that operators would also be prosecuted.

Under the theme “measurement and Light”, the 2015 celebration of the day, centres on the impact of measurement of daily lives.

Mr Darko notified that the enforcement exercise would be extended to cover operators of filling stations and other food manufacturers.

He stated that science and application of measurement played central roles in enabling the application and advancement of light-based technologies whether for more efficient energy production, a better understanding of climate change or optimal lighting of cities and towns.

Mr Darko explained that standardization played a key role in economic growth and accelerated national development, and therefore entreated Ghanaians, especially manufacturers to observe standards.
