An Obuasi Circuit Court has sentenced Kwadwo Marfo, a farmer and painter in the Golden City to 10 years imprisonment for possessing quantities of Indian hemp, weighing 15 grams.
He was found guilty under section 2(1) of Narcotic Control, Enforcement and Sanctions PNDC Law 236/90, which forbids anyone from possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authorization. He had earlier pleaded not guilty, explaining that he was out when police officers and a woman entered his room at Memerewa near Obuasi, and later told him that they had found leaves suspected to be Indian hemp in his room.
Marfo wrote in his caution statement to the police that he smoked the Indian hemp, popularly known as �wee�, to regain strength and to be able to have a good sleep. Opening prosecution, Chief Inspector Mohammed Agumah told the court presided over by Mr. Gilbert Ayisi Addo that the complainant was a policeman in Obuasi, whilst the accused person was a farmer and painter at Memerewa.
According to him, the accused was involved in an assault case at Obuasi police station and on July 26, 2006, law enforcement officers went to his resident to effect his arrest. Prosecution stated that the accused person (now convicted) was arrested whilst cutting some leaves suspected to Indian hemp with a knife in a room.
When questioned, the accused could not disclose his source of supply. The police however sent the suspected leaves to Accra for examination, which test proved to be positive of cannabis.
