The Department of Urban Roads, under the auspices of the Ministry of Roads and Highways, is constructing a 24-km by-pass road at Kasoa. Known as the Western By-pass, the road extends from the Kasoa Old Barrier at the Bortianor Junction on the Accra-Cape Coast road and passes through Kokrobite to Tuba and Nyanyano and on to the Winneba road.
In an interaction with the media on a tour of the road project, the Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Isaac Adjei Mensah, said the project was in preparation for an alternative route for traffic on the Accra-Cape Coast highway, which has grown rapidly and is still increasing.
He observed that travelling to Kasoa and areas beyond had currently become a daunting undertaking because of the heavy vehicular congestion on the main Accra-Cape Coast road.
The Western By-Pass project is being undertaken by a local contractor, Messrs Joshob Construction Company Ltd. The contract was awarded on April 30, 2014 and work was begun on June 2, 2014. The project is expected to be completed in 24 months.
Mr Mensah, who said work was progressing steadily, commended the contractor for the swift pace at which he was working and hoped that other contractors working on road projects in the country would work in a similar fashion.
“The contractor has 10 months to go and there are indications that work may be completed ahead of schedule,” he said.
The deputy minister was accompanied on the tour by senior officials from the ministry and departments under it. At Bawjiase, the entourage made a stop-over and were joined by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Cooperation, Ms Hannah Tetteh, to inspect some roads in the Awutu Senya West Constituency.
Mr Mensah said the ministry was set to carry out routine maintenance works on the Topease–Agona Swedru road as part of efforts to open up the area for enhanced economic activities.
He noted that the road was of economic importance, since it passed through Awutu Bawjiase which is the largest pineapple producing town in the Central Region. Lately, the poor condition of the road is causing needless delays and discomfort to both passengers and drivers.
