Marine and civil works have started at Tema in the Greater Accra Region and Aboadze in the Western Region respectively in preparation for the power barge and plants that will add 1000 megawatts (MW) of power to the national grid.
Work on the compacted ground for the 250MW from Ameri Power at the Aboadze Power Enclave in the Shama District is progressing steadily.
The project forms part of the government’s efforts to address the current power supply challenges in the country.

This came to light when the Minister of Power, Dr Kwabena Donkor, visited the Aboadzi Power Enclave to inspect progress of work on the project.
“I must say we at the ministry are following up closely to ensure that adequate power is delivered to the people of Ghana to speed up growth,” he stated.
The minister, however, noted that thermal energy generation had become the main source of power due to the exhaustion of the hydro sources.
According to the minister, the way forward was to ensure a cost effective tariff regime to attract independent power producers who are currently on the sidelines due to the prevailing low tariffs.
He further indicated that a realistic tariff regime was the best way out to attract more investment in the thermal energy generation sector.
Preparations
At the site for the power plants located near the T3, the contractor had finished excavating the swampy and weedy sites and was ready for compacting.
Even though the contractors did not give a timeline for the completion of the project, some of the workers indicated they were ahead of schedule.
