Ghana Is Still Suffering Economic Slavery After Independence - UPP Founder

Founder of the newly formed United Progressive Party (UPP), AKwasi Addae also known as Odike says it is only leaders from the private sector who can end the economic slavery which Ghana still finds itself in since political independence.

According to him, since Ghana’s political independence to date, the country is still embattled with economic problems by leaders from all other professions except businessmen as leaders of the country.

“Since we gained political independence to date, we have not been able to gain economic independence though efforts have been made in the past by our past leaders to emancipate us from the economic slavery,” he bemoaned.

Speaking on Okay Fm’s "Ade Akye Abia" Morning Show, Odike mentioned his party, UPP as the one with the means to fight for the country’s economic freedom.

He underscored that one of the hindrance to the economic empowerment in the country has to do with the educational structures which only prepares graduates to be job-seekers instead of job-creators.

“Our educational structure doesn’t give us direction for our graduate to be self-employed; all graduates are seeking to be employed by the state. We want to change that mindset so that they can establish their own businesses and nurture so many businessmen in the country,” he said.

He enlisted that it is the responsibility of the government to enhance the private sector so that there will be many job opportunities in the country and that it will take a leader in that same field to understand the importance of the private sector as it is not the case in the country.

“We know our political independence but what remains unsolved is our economic independence and due to this our leaders are always borrowing from the Europeans; it is not bad to borrow from people but it should not be always,” he opined.

He wondered why in the midst of the natural resources the country is blessed with, Ghana remains poor everyday; urging the government “it is time to fix the energy crisis so that we can bring in machines to preserve our food stuffs in order to provide food security in the country”.
