Ho Police Swoop On Robbers

The Police night patrol team at Ho, acted swiftly to arrest four young men believed to be members of an armed gang which attacked the household of a businesswoman, near the Ho-Housing at dawn on Wednesday, and robbed her of GH¢6, 800 and other items, at gunpoint.

They are Caleb Bob Zewu, 22, unemployed; Eric Asinyo, 23, who claimed to be an employee of a cellular phone company; Elikem Dikenu, 25, a self-styled computer technician and Dodzi Deku, 26, unemployed.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police, (ACP) W. A.K. Akpesey, Deputy Volta Regional Police Commander, the gangsters who were also armed with machetes and knives, ordered the woman to surrender all the money she had at home or risked her daughter being raped.

Meanwhile, they had already seized the woman’s three-year-old grand-daughter and threatened to take her away if she refused to surrender the money.

(ACP) Akpesey said the robbers struck the eight-member family at 1:30 a.m. during a power outage, while some members of the family were still awake, with the main door to the house still open.

“In the course of the raid, the armed men repeatedly spanked the woman on the back and buttocks with a cutlass and threatened to shoot her son if he made any move,” said Mr. Akpesey.

The Deputy Regional Police Commander  said after collecting the money, the robbers also took away two laptop computers with modems, a flat screen television set and  four cellular phones from their victims, while other members of the gang waited outside in the darkness.

The robbers left the house just before the police patrol team arrived at the scene upon a tip-off.

However, the woman’s son who recognised the gang leader, Zewu, led members of the patrol team to his house nearby, where he was arrested.

“Zewu’s arrest subsequently led to the capture of the other suspects at different locations,” said Mr. Akpesey.

A search in the rooms of the suspects revealed two laptop computers, five cellular phones, a pepper spray, camouflage military uniforms, a chisel and a tablet computer.

A motorbike fitted with a fake registration number plate, belonging to Zewu has also been impounded by the police.

Mr. Akpesey said, a search had been mounted for the other two suspects while investigations continued.
