2016 Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Friday waded into the party’s current imbroglio and appealed for cool heads to prevail with immediate effect.
At a press conference held at the party's National Headquarters, Nana Addo counseled NPP members to cease apportioning blames and the media war, since that is not the best approach to resolving party disputes.
“All party members must cease fire. The finger pointing, the name calling, the insults, the lies, the denigrating of past and current leaders must stop! They are to be condemned,” he said.
He however urged its party members to esteem the legacy of former president Kufour saying “we must jealously guard. There is absolutely nothing to gain from internal recriminations with the NPP than to provide fertile soil for our opponent,” he added.
His address comes days after the escalation of the internal wrangling in the NPP and the untimely death of the party’s Upper East regional chairman, Adams Mahama.
Mahama, a week ago was attacked by two assailants with acid leading to his death at the Bolgatanga hospital.
Younger brother of NPP’s party national chairman Gregory Afoko has been accused as the first suspect who masterminded the acidic attack on Adams Mahama while the second suspect is said to be on the run.
At Friday's press conference, Nana Addo maintained that the infighting in the NPP shows gross disrespect to the family of the late Adams Mahama.
“It is unseemly and disrespectful towards the memory of Chairman Adams that such loud noises should continue within the party, whilst we are still in the official mourning period. A certain amount of outburst induced by the tragedy is understandable because of the extreme nature of the tragedy, but that should not mean that NPP members should behave out of character, he said.
He further called on the party leadership including elders to help resolve issues within the NPP.
“I am confident that these bodies will act in the collective interest of the party,” he prayed.
