Police Beef Up Security At NPP Headquarters

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command yesterday beefed up security at the premises of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) headquarters following clashes between two rival private security groups.

It all started a few minutes to noon, when a group made up of about 30 macho men attempted to stormed the premises and forcibly take over the guard duties.

But they were not allowed access by another group, known as the “Invisible Force” that took over the premises last week Thursday and declared the area a “no go zone” for the party’s national chairman, Paul Afoko and general secretary, Kwabena Agyepong.

The group said both chairman and the general secretary would be allowed entrance into the headquarters only after investigations were concluded into circumstances that led to the death of the late Adams Mahama, the Upper East regional chairman of the party.

This, led to a heavy police presence in the area since then.

Yesterday’s melee would have been bloody had the police not intervene on time.

When The Ghanaian Times visited the party’s headquarters there was re-inforcement, with police personnel patrolling the frontage of the headquarters.

Armored cars and other security vehicles were parked at vantage points to curtail any violence that may erupt.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu and the Nima Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Nuhu Jango were also at the scene to assess the situation.

Some of the security personnel who spoke on condition of anonymity said calm has been restored and that there had been no confrontation since they arrived.

Meanwhile, for security reasons, entering into the party’s headquarters by the general public had been restricted by the party’s security personnel.

At the time The Ghanaian Times was leaving the scene, only the deputy general secretary of the party, Nana Obiri Boahene, was at post whilst the party’s national chairman, and general secretary, were said to be at a meeting in Kumasi in the Ashanti region.
