The Convention People’s Party (CPP) and the People’s National Convention (PNC) have resolved to regroup and constitute one formidable and invincible Nkrumaist party to prosecute the agenda to win the 2016 general election.

In line with this, they have signed and agreed to constitute all elected executive officers of the two parties to organise one national congress to elect national officers to steer the affairs of both parties.

A similar national congress will be organised to elect a presidential candidate.

Details of these processes will be determined by a joint electoral committee of both parties.

Laudable initiatives
The laudable initiatives reached between the parties were disclosed to the Daily Graphic by the general secretaries of the PNC and the CPP, Mr Bernard Mornah and Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, respectively, in an exclusive interview in Accra on Saturday.

According to the two leading members of the PNC and the CPP, agreements were reached at a closed-door meeting attended by the two party chairmen, Ms Samia Nkrumah of the CPP and Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan of the PNC.

Also in attendance were Mr Greenstreet and Mr Mornah.

Osagyefo Dr Nkrumah
Mr Mornah and Mr Greenstreet declared that both the PNC and the CPP were very committed to upholding and adhering to Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s precept that: “Now that we have achieved our political freedom, we must consolidate our independence by building a solid foundation that will establish in Ghana the highest standards of honesty and integrity both in our public and private lives.”

They stated that the two parties were also determined to ensure that Dr Nkrumah’s vision of a Ghana socially stable and united, politically independent and economically free and prosperous was kept alive and followed to its full realisation.

The two recalled that the democratically elected government of the CPP was overthrown through a coup d’etat on February 24, 1966. On December 31, 1981, the democratically elected government of the PNC, a successor party of the CPP, was also overthrown through a coup d’etat.

Background
It will be recalled that on May 14, 2008, the Daily Graphic reported that the PNC and the CPP had reached an agreement to enter into an alliance for the 2008 elections.

While the CPP’s confirmation of that agreement was reported, the official confirmation of this from the PNC to calm the nerves of all Nkrumaists never happened.

However, on Thursday, May 22, 2008, Dr Edward Mahama, the flag bearer of the PNC, held a press conference to announce the rejection of the alliance agreement by his party’s National Executive Committee.

The two parties later blamed the rejection of the alliance on what they both termed as a  breach of trust. The PNC further explained that little opportunity was given for it to discuss the agreement with the rank and file of the membership.
