The opposition New Patriotic Party has been enjoying relative calm since the party’s presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, held a press conference Friday and called for ceasefire among members who were stoking controversies and commotion in the party.
Before Nana Addo’s press conference, the party had been thrown into confusion, with accusations and counter-accusation in various sections, following the death of the party’s Upper East Regional Chairman, Alhaji Adams Mahama.
“Since the tragedy, there has been an outbreak of a cacophony of voices within out party. There have been many cries from the heart by party loyalists and supporters and a sense of despair felt by many, has been demonstrated in various ways.” Nana Addo acknowledge when he addressed the press.
He drew attention to the fact that the NPP was not the first party to face crisis, just as it would not be the last party to come out of its crisis stronger. “I am confident of our capacity to overcome and we shall overcome,” Nana Addo assured the party’s members and sympathizers.
The NPP presidential candidate, however, condemned what he described as “the finger pointing, the lies, and the denigrating of past and current leaders of the party, and accordingly called for a ceasefire.
As I have tried to deal with my own personal loss and heartbreak, I have been listening to many people and taking on board the controversies and sentiments that have been generated. It is my responsibility as flag bearer to listen and, then, seek to do what is in the best interest of our party.
“Having heard so many people, my first call on all party members and supporters is to cease fire. The finger pointing, the name calling, the insults, the lies, the denigrating of past and current leaders must stop. They are to be roundly condemned,” he stated.
