Despite the attempts by the government to strengthen Ghana�s health system, through investment in infrastructure, the health of the rural communities are far from satisfactory. This has been worsened by their poor nutrition and reproductive health, an increasing rate of non-communicable diseases and drug resistant malaria and tuberculosis.
The situation has resulted in high morbidity and mortality rate especially, in the rural community. The Social Franchise Manager of the freedom from Hunger, Mr Daniel Ekow Mensah, made the observation, at the 2009 Health keepers Franchise Convention, in Accra.
The Freedom from Hunger Project, seeks to empower the rural communities by creating job opportunities for them and build their health status. The project which is barely two years has 239 personnel known as Health keepers in 12 districts across the country, who bring basic health products to about 243,780 people. They seek to reach about 50% of the poor rural communities with health products and information by 2012.
In her presentation, the Programmes Manager of Peace 104.3 fm, Henrietta Konadu, urged women to rise to the occasion, and work to bring up their children at the passage of their husbands. She said, many widows have invested in their children, instead of engaging in unprofitable ventures, and therefore widowhood should not be an excuse of responsibilities. She asked the Health keepers to adopt effective family planning system and support their homes for effective society.
