Akatsi Sec-Tech Students Sneak To Jams, Wake-Keeping

Some students from two dormitories at Akatsi Senior High Technical School have taken advantage of the absence of their housemasters to sneak out in the night to attend social events such as jams and wake-keeping during funerals.

Students of Akatsi Sec-Tech dormitories ‘A’ and ‘B’ have not had a housemaster over the years.

Two popular spots in the town - Jamaica Spot and Americano Spot - often hold night events, and junior high school (JHS) students and senior high school students always patronise them.

Another partying ground is the Akatsi Main Lorry Station, where night jams are often held on Fridays, with a large patronage by the students.

According to some students The Finder interacted with, dormitory ‘B’ has a housemaster, but he has been ineffective, while dormitory ‘A’ has no housemaster.

The students said the location of their dormitories and the absence of a housemaster have given the recalcitrant students the chance to go out on drinking spree and funeral wakes.

As at the time of our visit, neither the headmaster of Akatsi Senior High Technical School, Mr. Shelter Ladzekpo, nor his assistant was available to speak on the matter.

When contacted on the issue, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Akatsi South, Samuel Wuadi, said several reports of students sneaking out in the night have been reported to his office.

According to him, JHS and primary pupils also patronise social events at night.

To check the situation, therefore, Mr. Wuadi said his office has formed a taskforce.

He wondered why students and pupils would spend most of their time going to jams and attending wakes instead of reading their books.

He said information has been sent to all the schools in the district warning students and pupils to stay away from jams and wake-keepings to avoid being arrested by the taskforce.

The punishment to be meted out, he explained, would be made known to all students when they arrest culprits.

Mr. Wuadi said the assembly is sourcing for funds to complete some accommodation facilities within Akatsi Sec-Tech for male students.
