More than 400 residents in four communities in the Ajumako Enyan-Essiam District of the Central Region have been displaced, following a two-day torrential rains last week that completely destroyed about 30 houses Enyan Obontser was the most affected community where a total of 290 residents were displaced.
Also affected were Breman Bekoso, Enyan Apaa and Nsawadze communities. Mr. Frederick Appiah, District Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), briefed the Central Regional Minister, Aquinas Tawiah Quansah when he visited the area on Tuesday to assess the extent of damage caused by the rains.
Personal belongings such as television sets, mattresses, furniture, cloths and many others, running into thousands of Ghana Cedis were all destroyed as a result of the floods. The displaced persons are currently putting up with friends and family members awaiting assistance from NADMO and other philanthropic institutions .
Some of the victims who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nsawadze, one of the affected communities, were of the view that the floods were caused by the poor drainage system along the main road linking their community to Ajumako.
They claimed that they had not been experiencing floods until that drainage was constructed, and called on the authorities to ensure that proper drainage was reconstructed to avert any further calamity.
Mr. James Oppong, Central Regional Manager of the Ghana Feeder Roads, admitted that the gutters were narrow, but said the floods were not completely caused by the narrow nature of the gutters adding that ‘the rains were too heavy’.
He indicated that proper measures would be put in place to ensure that floods of such nature did not occur again. The Regional Minister commiserated with the victims and assured them of government’s support.
He advised the residents to regularly mobilize themselves, and embark on clean-up exercises to desilt chocked gutters to prevent floods.
