LEAP Programme Absorbs Flood, Fire Victims

The Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection together with the Department of Social Welfare has rolled out special programmes to register victims of the June 3 disaster onto the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) scheme.

Personnel of the Department of Social Welfare are currently going round with the help of the assembly to identify the affected victims' families mostly women and children displaced and enroll them onto the LEAP programme.

Disclosing this to the DAILY HERITAGE in an interview, the Social Development Officer of the Department of Social Welfare-Osu Klottey Sub-Metro, Mrs. Grace Benson said the department is determined to ensure that the initiative is sustained.

Mrs. Benson revealed that the department's core mandate is the welfare of society, especially, women and children. “In times like this, a child or woman who has lost his or her father, husband or mother will be disturbed, so the department comes in to take care of the children.

“So our immediate solution is to help such victims by donating some moneys through LEAP to them,” she stated.

She revealed that the department and the ministry donated money and other items on Friday as a preliminary measure.

The Social Welfare Officer said, though it will be difficult to identify such victims, the department has earmarked some areas such as Odawna, Adabraka, and some parts of Osu as targeted areas; “we will expand it to the other parts of the city until all of them are covered.”

On the question of whether the department has received any donation from individuals, the private sector and the government, she reiterated that all donations are under the supervision of the National Disaster Management Organization.
