Local Government Ministry Launches Litter Bin Programme

Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, on Tuesday launched the maiden National Sanitation Day (NSD) Litter Bin programme in Accra.

He said the pilot programme seeks to educate as well as control the extensive littering attitude of the citizenry.

‘’At the moment we have five bins going to be placed on the starlets streets for pedestrian usage,’’ he said.

Nii Lantey Vanderpuye said the programme forms part of the NSD’s goals that aim at educating as well as helping the citizenry to understand the ministry’s interest in keeping the country clean.

Presenting the first bin manufactured by Royalty Steel Fabrication and Engineering Company Limited to the Vice Chairman of the Circle Ministries Taxi Union of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Mr Vanderpuye observed that if the pilot phase goes well, all district assemblies would be involved.

He cautioned the public not to steal the bins or use it for domestic purposes, adding that it is time for all to become responsible to their individual responsibilities.

“Anyone who will be caught trying to steal the bin or using it for other purposes, the law will deal with you,” he warned.

On the collection of refuse, Mr Vanderpuye said ESPA Waste Management organisation would be in charge.

Mr Ebenezer Asante, Vice Chairman, Ministries Taxi Union of GPRTU, said the introduction of the NSD Litter Bin would help improve upon the sanitation station at the station.

“This is not going to serve our clients only but all pedestrian who use the streets,” he said.
