The SOFEHU family in the Volta Region is in a state of fear over the death of many family members most of who were fetish priests. The deaths followed the handling of an ancient schnapps bottle which they (dead family members) used as part of the items forming their gods.
The deadly bottle has two shoulders and water god (Maame water) symbols on its shoulders.
The type of bottle became hot cake in Ghana recently when many people combed the length and breadth of the country and paid several millions of Ghana Cedis to acquire one.
Interestingly, none of those who were desperately looking for the bottle could tell or disclose the purpose for acquiring them.
Speaking to the Daily Heritage at his shrine at Akyem Kukuratumi in the Eastern Region, one of the family members, Togbe Shittor, who happens to be a fetish priest and the Nsumankwaahene (head of fetish priests and priestesses) of Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area said, the bottle was acquired by his great grandfather, Togbega Gadzi, who was a fetish priest so many years back and after his death, another fetish priest, Togbega Akogdagba inherited him and took over the bottle and other gods he left behind.
“This is where our troubles started, since we did not know how to handle the bottle, so Togbega Akogdagba and a host of others died mysteriously at short intervals,” he lamented.
His biological father, Togbega Sofehu, himself a fetish priest, later took custody of the bottle and tried to know the cause of deaths of the family members and that was where it was revealed that the strange bottle was behind the cause of mysterious deaths in the family.
Unfortunately, Togbega Sofehu also died mysteriously about two years ago leaving the family to their fate. The troubled family had no choice than to send the bottle and the gods to Togbe Shittor's shrine at Akyem Kukuntumi to find a solution to the problem.
According to Togbe Shittor, ever since the bottle was brought to him, he has had no peace. “Even to get close to it is a problem,” he stated.
According to him, many of his colleague spiritualists have tried to offer assistance but to no avail.
In the presence of this reporter, the priest had to perform a lot of rituals before the picture of the bottle was taken. He told this paper that he was still struggling to find a solution to the problem the bottle was causing the family.
