Traders at the Kejetia lorry terminal are calling on the government to re-locate the Kumasi Zoological Garden, to a more strategic venue to boost domestic tourism.
They said, the Zoo needed to be located in a more serene environment, instead of its present location where “the din, cacophony”, pollution and congestion, resulting from brisk business activities at the hub of the city, was not the best in attracting visitors.
The traders argued that re-locating the Zoo could also facilitate expansion works at the Central Business District, to help accommodate the growing number of traders for economic growth.
Ms. Margaret Yeboah, a concerned trader, told the Ghana News Agency that fumes emitting from commercial vehicles at the terminal, which was about hundred metres from the Zoo, posed serious environmental hazards to wildlife at the enclave.
“We are of the view that re-locating the Zoo has the potential to boost the economy,” she said, citing the ability of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to maximize revenue generation if the Central Business District (CBD), was to be expanded.
She was hopeful that moving the Zoo to an environmentally-friendly area was also in the best interest of the animals, which needed an unpolluted area for growth and longevity.
