One of Ghana’s biggest shanty towns – Sodom and Gomorrah – in the capital Accra has been razed down by city authorities.
The mayor of Accra Alfred Oko Vanderpuije led the demolition exercise, which was carried out by the security services.
Hundreds of dwellers have been displaced following the bulldozer raid which was aimed at solving the perennial flooding in Accra.
Fire gutted the demolished structures as the exercise was being carried out on Saturday. According to reports, the residents deliberately torched the place to halt the demolition. However, the exercise continued unabated.
About 159 persons lost their lives in a fire and flood disaster which occurred on June 3 in Accra. The AMA has served notice more structures on waterways will be flattened in the coming days.
