Mr Robert Nachinab Doameng Mosore, immediate past Member of Parliament (MP) for Talensi, now installed as traditional ruler, on Friday made a regal entry into Parliament to bid farewell to his former colleagues.
Resplendent in traditional northern smock in black and white stripes, and wine colour traditional cap, and sandals to match, the 61- year-old former legislator, held a whisk of bushy ponytail as he was ushered into the chamber.
His former colleagues, out of respect for him gave him a standing ovation.
And when he had finished his speech, there was again a rapturous applause and a standing ovation to give the chief by skin name Toongorana Kubilsong Nalebegtan, a good adieu into his new position as Paramount Chief of Talensi in the Upper East Region.
Mr Mosore, who had been in Parliament on the ticket of the Minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) formally resigned his position to be able to be made a traditional ruler in his constituency since the 1992 Ghanaian constitution debars traditional rulers from taking active part in partisan politics.
He concluded his address by saying: “As I walk into my new life, I can only hope and pray that the good Lord who brought me into this noble House would surely sustain the growth and development of this institution and Mother Ghana.”
His exit makes way for a bye election at Talensi and the Electoral Commission has fixed July 7 for the contest.
Mr Mosore expressed gratitude to the Speaker Edward Korbly Doe Adjaho, the Leadership, and the entire House for the honour done him.
He was the first MP to have resigned from the House to become a paramount chief in the history of the nation’s parliament.
Mr Mosore, a first time MP, said his two and half years with the House had been very enlightening and challenging. ”Although the experience in my previous public service life proved useful, I have “come to appreciate that the task of legislator is not only unique, but also daunting.”
“My exposure to the rules of engagement both at the plenary and in Committee, the behind the scenes consultative processes with you Mr Speaker, Leadership of the House, the Executive and other stakeholders has proven insightful. This will certainly enrich my new endeavour,” he said.
He expressed his personal appreciation to the Speaker for his guidance, admonition, encouragement and support for new MPs in the face of challenges.
“I cannot conclude my short remarks without thanking the good people of Talensi who found it worthy to give me the outstanding opportunity to serve them in this House. My sincere thanks also go to my Party, the NPP for giving me the platform in the first place to become Member of Parliament. May the Media also accept my heartfelt gratitude for giving me the necessary publicity,’ Mr Mosore said.
Contributions from both sides of the House congratulated Mr Mosore on his new position.
Mr Kofi Frimpong (NPP) MP for Kwabre, describe Mr Mosore as someone who has achieved a certain level of success, with good emotional skills.
Mr Iddrisu Fuseini, MP for Tamale Central said Mr Mosore was a responsible member of the House.
“Now that you are the father for all, you are associated with not only NPP, but also the NDC as well.”
Mr Alban Bagbin, Majority Leader called on chiefs to help in the development of their constituencies.
