Rain Scatters NDC Rally

A heavy downpour which lasted over three hours disrupted the launching of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC’s) ‘Agenda 50-50’ campaign at Suhum in the Eastern Region on Saturday.

The main objective of the project, code-named ‘Kyemu pe’, as gathered, is to ensure that the party shares the total valid votes to be cast in the region in 2016 equally with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) – the region being one of the strongholds of the main opposition party (NPP).

Currently, the NDC has seven seats in the region’s 33 constituencies, while the rest are under the control of the NPP. But the launch of the campaign was disrupted by the heavy downpour.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that the former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo; the NDC Deputy General Secretary, Koku Anyidoho; the National Organiser, Kofi Adams; Loretta Martha Brew; Solomon Nkansah; Sidi Abubakar, the Youth Organiser and Tawiah Boateng, the regional chairman, among other NDC gurus, managed to address the supporters before the downpour.

Alcohol Flows

Some of the NDC supporters, who were stranded at the venue, defied the rain and danced to kpalogo songs. The Regional Chairman, Bismark Tawiah Boateng, who got worried about the occurrence, went to his vehicle, opened the booth and removed over 10 bottles of Joy Daddy Bitters, an alcoholic drink, and shared them among the supporters in the rain.

The National First Vice Chairman of the NDC, when addressing the supporters, posited that the NPP had dominated the region for far too long and that the trend must be reversed.

Ofosu Ampofo said just like the Ashanti Region which has also declared ‘operation one million votes,’ “We think we are on course.”

The national and the regional party executives as well as the invited guests jumped into their vehicles and left the venue, bringing the programme into an abrupt end.

The heavy downpour stopped some speakers like Baba Jamal, Solomon Nkansah, Koku Anyidoho, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi from addressing the supporters.

NPP’s Reaction

Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party, David Prah, has urged people in the region not to panic about the ruling NDC’s ‘agenda 50-50’ plan.

According to him, the government has failed the people of the region and Ghana in general, and so Ghanaians should not take them seriously.

“In the midst of current economic hardships, corruption on the part of the president and his appointees, coupled with gross incompetence being exhibited by President John Mahama in the management of the region’s resources, it would be unfortunate and infantile for the NDC to think of 50% of votes in the Eastern Region,” he stated.

He further called on the people of the region to ignore the noise from the NDC and stay focused to ensure that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo becomes the president of the Republic of Ghana.

He urged the NPP supporters to work hard for the party to win the 2016 presidential and the parliamentary elections.
