A vociferous member of the Progressive People Party has condemned the Electoral Commission of Ghana following an announcement that it has resumed preparations for the conduct of the District Assembly and Unit Committee elections.

A statement issued by the commission says the elections will be held on Tuesday September 1 in all electoral areas and units except those in the Lower Manya Krobo district in the Eastern Region.

Nomination of candidates will take place on Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd July for the District Assembly elections, and Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th July, 2015 for the Unit Committee elections.

But Mr. Charles Owusu in an interview with Peacefmonline.com described the exercise as a waste of time and resource.

According to him, majority of the candidates who get elected and appointed through the exercise end up being “toothless bulldogs" who can never act on their own authority but rather, succumb to directives from a sitting government.

"How can we deal with issues like flooding and cholera if we have MCEs and DCEs appointed by the sitting government. They would only act if government says so", he said.

Until government steps aside and allow Metropolitan and District Chief Executives to be elected by the people, Mr. Owusu claims the exercise would continue breeding leaders with limited powers to act appropriately. According to him, people are made to elect MCEs and DCE’s; they would act responsibly at all times.
