West Hills Mall Robbers Jailed 50 Years Each

The two robbers who attacked shoppers at the West Hills Mall in Accra last month have been sentenced to 50 years imprisonment each.

The two, Stephen Ayombah, 20 years and Sulley Jali, 24 years, who were part of a gang of six, were charged with robbery after they shot two persons and attempted to rob moviegoers of their belongings at the Silverbird Cinema.

Delivering his judgment, Justice Francis Obiri expressed surprise at the fact that they attempted robbery in broad day light.  Earlier, Sule Jali, had stunned the Judge at an Accra Circuit Court who had granted him bail in another robbery case recently, when he mounted the dock again.

When Sule had mounted the dock on Monday, the trial Judge, Justice Francis Obiri, who recognised him asked: “You again?”

Explaining his actions, Jali said he had taken the pistol, which they had used in the robbery, from a Fulani Herdsman to rob, to enable him to raise GH₡1,500.00 to pay his pregnant wife’s medical bills.

The wife, he claimed, has been diagnosed as a Hepatitis B patient.

Jali, along with Stephen Ayomba, a.k.a. Kweku, a cobbler had been held on the charge of conspiracy to commit crime, robbery and two counts of causing harm.

According to the prosecutor, the gang of robbers had shot indiscriminately through the Silver Star Cinema Centre and the injured had been rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment.

According to DSP Acheampong, investigations revealed that Jali had been granted bail by the same court for a similar robbery incident.

Prosecution alleged that ever since Jali was granted bail, he had paid regular visits to the West Hills Mall and visited the Accounts office regularly.

Meanwhile, four of their accomplices are said to be on the run.
