There're “Ashawos” In Every Community, Not S & G Alone… – Prez of Ghana Slums Asso.

Their inferior living conditions and alleged practice of prostitution have been part of reasons why government pulled down wooden structures in the nation’s biggest slum area – aside building on waterways.

Now roofless migrants at the Sodom and Gomorrah slum in Accra are battling with government for the right to evacuate them from their own-made ‘city’.

The displaced settlers [Sodom & Gomorrah] went furious after taking over the Central Business District and the State House Monday morning to embark on a massive demonstration to register their displeasure at Saturday’s demolition of some structures.

However, speaking on OKAY FM’s "Ade Akye Abia" morning show, the president of Ghana Slums Association, Philip Kumah argued that the demolition exercise spearheaded by the Accra mayor could have been done with some “dignity”.

He told host Kwame Nkrumah that, allegations that the slum expose innocent children to sexual activities were unfortunate.

Philip alleged that, other well-respected communities in the country practice prostitution “more than we in Sodom and Gomorrah” - “There are Ashawo [Prostitutes] in every community in Ghana. Sodom and Gomorrah is not the only place. They should spare us that”.

He however debunked claims that a political party was fueling their protest – “We are doing this on our own, we are Ghanaians just like any other person”.
