A Suspected phone thief has been abducted and beaten to pulp by some angry youth of Oguaa in the New Juaben Municipality of the Eastern region.

The suspect, who was only identified as Gilbert, was rescued from the hands of the angry mob by the police on Sunday.

The suspect was alleged to have snatched a mobile phone from a lady known as Mary and went into hiding; however, lack eluded him when he was spotted by the daring youth who were searching for him.

On seeing him, they grabbed him; beat him to pulp compelling him to admit the offence. However, his failure to produce the phone added more salt to his injury as the mob intensified their torture until the morning of Sunday.

On Sunday morning at about 10am, the torture and flogging of the suspect resumed on the principal streets of Evelyn Spot at Oguaa.

The suspect, who was gasping amidst blood dripping off some parts of his body, was later rescued by the Police visibility team from the New Juaben Municipal Police Command.

The Police immediately issued medical forms to the suspect who has been treated and discharged from the hospital. Residents claim, the suspect is a notorious phone snatcher known in the area, hence their anger.

The New Juaben Municipal Police Commander, Supt. Richardson Kumeko, has described the action of the youth as unlawful and has ordered investigation to be conducted to apprehend and punish those involved in the beating of the suspect.

Supt. Kumeko said instant justice is prohibited by the Constitution of Ghana and therefore cautioned the public to desist from the act.
