British police and spies will be sent into north Africa to target people smuggling gangs behind the migration crisis in the Mediterranean and destroy their boats.

Officers from the National Crime Agency will be supported by the Border Force, GCHQ and MI6 to disrupt the operations of gangs paid by desperate migrants hoping to reach Europe.

Ministers said they would act to identify and destroy boats used to carry thousands of people across the Mediterranean.
