The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has challenged the new Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Charlotte Osei to ensure that subsequent elections do not end up at the Supreme Court.

“Madam electoral commissioner, there is no other window of opportunity should the 2016 elections be grounded again in an electoral dispute.”

AFAG admonished Charlotte Osei in a press statement: “as you step to work in your new office, you have only 2 choices for a working principle. Either you consider serving your God & country in search of a peaceful and stable Ghana for your children and children’s children or you sacrifice this God given virtue to the whims and caprices of your appointing authority obviously to jeopardize the stability of this country.” 

AFAG further urged Charlotte Osei to be “firm but listening,” and make sure she doesn’t soil her reputation and that of the Electoral Commission.

“A few women in the past few years have brought their public office into disrepute. We urge you not to follow same. The role of IPAC as a consultative forum for stakeholders should not be over looked and undermined.”


AFAG also asked that the new EC chairperson must reform and strengthen the electoral commission’s structures, and also ensure “transparency in the use of IT for your electoral operations and adhering strictly to the rules and regulations of elections.”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) challenged the results of the 2012 election at the Supreme Court alleging that some of the results were rigged to favour NDC’s presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.

The Supreme Court after eight months affirmed President Mahama as the winner of the 2012 elections.
