A lecturer at the Legon Centre for International Affairs says Africans should not be too alarmed over the legalization of homosexuality in the United States of America (USA). 

According to Prof Gilbert Bluwey, though same sex marriage is a criminal act in most countries in the world, it is the responsibility of Africans to be firm and resist any attempt by the USA to introduce it in Africa.

“Though Americans are not enforcing it but rather propagating the act with physical force,  Africans need to be more cautious because it would have a great and wrong turn implication on Africa” he said.

The US Supreme Court on Friday ruled that same-sex marriage is a legal right across the United States.

In a historic 5-4 decision, Justice Anthony Kennedy writing for the majority ruled that marriage is a constitutional right for all.

"No union is more profound than marriage,'' he wrote, backed by the court's four more liberal justices.

It is unclear how soon marriage licences will be issued in states where gay unions were previously prohibited.

Before the ruling on Thursday, gay couples could marry in 37 states in addition to Washington DC.

But Prof Bluwey, reacting on the ruling pointed out that in as much as gays contribute financially to the economy of the United States, Africans should not allow themselves to be forced to accept any such move during negotiations with the United States for aid.

He stated: “It is believed that most gay partners contribute much in the economy but this should not lure us into practicing the same thing all in the name of seeking help from them.

“It is a crime in Ghana and Africa and so we need to have that courage and not allow ourselves to be pressured else it would spell doom in Africa” he stressed on Adom FM's Dwaso Nsem morning show Monday.
