Farmer Charged For Damaging Cocoa Trees

A 60-year old farmer, accused of causing unlawful damage by cutting down 569 cocoa trees, has been granted a GH₵5,000 bail with one surety by the Kumawu Circuit Court.

Cecilia Agyei, alias Abena Ataa, who is said to have destroyed the economic trees, valued at GH₵52,656, the property of Akosua Boatemaa with whom she was disputing over a piece of land.

She pleaded guilty to the charge at the court, presided over by Mr Benjamin Osei, and would reappear on July 8, for her sentence.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Paul Kuldze told the court that the accused and Boatemaa, the complainant, were farmers at Wonoo near Kumawu, in the Sekyere-Kumawu District of Ashanti, who had some controversies over a piece of land some time ago.

On May 4, the complainant visited her cocoa farm and saw that the accused had cut down the trees so she made a report to the Kumawu Police who arrested Cecilia.

She admitted the offence in her caution statement and was, subsequently, arraigned after investigations.
