Policeman Shot In Genitals

A policeman attached to the Peki District Police Station narrowly escaped death at dawn Tuesday when he was shot at by highway robbers at a spot between Tsibu and Agbate in the South Dayi District in the Volta Region.

Corporal Emmanuel Kwabena Awuah was shot in the knee, but a cartridge hit his penis, causing him to bleed profusely. He is said to be in critical condition at the Volta Regional Hospital in Ho. The attackers also robbed the driver and two mates of a trailer of two mobile phones and GH¢900 after assaulting them mercilessly.

The Peki District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr Jonas Agbevam, told the Daily Graphic that the policeman was returning to his station from anti-armed robbery duties at the Todome Checkpoint around 3 a.m. when the incident occurred. The robbers had earlier impounded the trailer from the driver and used it to block the road between Tsibu and Agbate.

According to the commander, Corporal Awuah, on reaching the area, thought the vehicle had been involved in an accident and, therefore, went to find out what had happened.

However, before he could reach the spot, one of the robbers shot him in the knee, Mr Agbevam said, adding that Corporal Awuah, who was armed, fired back, but the robbers managed to escape.

He said armed policemen rushed to the scene to meet their colleague bleeding profusely.

“We rushed him to the Peki Hospital, from where he was referred to the Volta Regional Hospital where he is now receiving treatment,” he stated.

The commander said highway robbery was becoming rampant in the area but the police lacked the necessary logistics, especially vehicles, to tackle the menace. As of the time of filing this report, no arrest had been made.

The driver of the trailer and his mates have since made a complaint to the police and investigations have started.

However, Mr Agbevam said, the police were yet to receive any additional reports from other people who might have been attacked or robbed by the suspects.
