Eastern Region NDC Accuses NPP of Insensitivity

The Eastern Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed its disappointment in the Minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) group in Parliament for pushing for the siting of the main campuses of the Eastern University in Koforidua instead of Somanya and Donkokrom.

According to the NDC, the NPP, through its Members of Parliament, have once again openly disclosed their dislike for the people of Kroboland and Afram Plains.

"We, however, thank the majority National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament for strongly supporting the idea of establishing a university in the Eastern Region", said the branch of the party.

Addressing a press conference in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional Communications Officer of the NDC, Mr Baba Janneh Konneh, accused the minority of insensitivity.

Launch of agenda 50 -50 at Suhum
Mr Konneh announced the launch of the party’s "Agenda 50 -50 project" at Suhum on the theme "Recapturing the region’’ which took place last weekend.

This, he said, was an indication that the NDC was prepared to take control of the region once again, saying "we think the region must go to its rightful owner, which is the NDC".

Mr Konneh said the region had never been the stronghold of the NPP and pointed out that in 1992 and 1996, the NDC won the region with 57.26 per cent and 53.80 per cent respectively and only lost to the NPP in the 2000 elections.

He said with the current crop of leaders from the branch, constituency and the regional level, the party was poised to achieve the goal of the project.

"When we say Agenda 50 -50, we do not mean we are sharing the percentage with the NPP but rather winning 50 per cent of the total votes for the rest of the political parties to share the remaining 50 per cent and we know the CPP, PNC, PPP and others will not allow the NPP to take the remaining 50 per cent", he added.

Projects
Mr Konneh said with the unprecedented number of projects, both completed and ongoing, undertaken in the region, the Agenda 50 -50 was achievable, especially for the provision of water for Kyebi and its environs, and construction of roads across the region, among other facilities, which are all good indicators for measuring the party's success in 2016.

The Regional Secretary of the party, Mr Mark -Oliver Kevor, said the NDC had targeted 15 seats in the region, which include Abirem, Asuogyaman, Ayensuano and Suhum.

According to him, the NDC, through its activities, had completely dwarfed the NPP, adding that this was to be expected in the 2016 general election.

"The kind (sic) of parliamentary candidates elected by the NPP fits into our strategy to win handsomely in the region,” he stated.
