John ‘Goldfinger’ Palmer, someone once wrote, could have walked straight from the pages of a trashy crime thriller. The comparison did the underworld boss a disservice.
Instead of trashy thriller, think classic British gangster films: The Long Good Friday, Mona Lisa and, more recently, Ray Winstone’s Sexy Beast, set on the Costa del Crime — Palmer’s old ‘parish’. Any number of characters in those movies — so-called old school villains — could have been modelled on perma-tanned Palmer.
