Eastern Region Department Of Gender In Darkness

The Department of Gender, Children and Social Protection in the Eastern Region has been plunged into total darkness due to the inability of the regional directorate to purchase prepaid credit.

The situation has brought to a halt all administrative exercises and duties. Staff at the office were spotted sitting idle during the investigations by the DAILY HERITAGE newspaper.

Further investigations have revealed that for almost a year, the Regional Director, Madam Jane Kwapong has been paying for electricity bills from her own pocket. The Director pays at least GH¢300.00 monthly for the purchase of prepaid credit.

However, the Director is unable to continue paying for the electricity bills from her own pocket, hence, the darkness. Staff members at the department are worried about the situation since they have been rendered unproductive as computers and other machines being used have been shut down due to lack of power supply.

The investigations revealed serious financial drought at the department due to delays in payment of budgetary allocation since last year to run the office and implement other policies.

The department has since been bedridden and unable to implement policies and hold programs in relation to improving the welfare of the people, in particular, women and children.
