2 Prisoners Escape In Kumasi

Two prisoners, serving various sentences at the Amanfrom Camp Prisons, near Kumasi, in the Ashanti region, reportedly escaped on Friday.

The two prisoners, names immediately not available, allegedly escaped whilst they were working with their colleagues on the farm in the afternoon.

There were initial reports that the prisoners broke through the strong walls of the Amanfrom Prisons to their freedom.

But prison officers stated categorically that no prison break had taken place at the camp as was being spread.

“Initial reports that there has been a prison break at the Amanfrom Camp Prisons is not true,” Lance Corporal George Owusu, Assistant Regional Prisons PRO, said.

According to him, “It is indeed true that two prisoners could not be located on the farm, but they did not break from the prisons as reported.”

L/Cpl Owusu said on Otec FM that the two prisoners, whose identities he did not give, escaped whilst working on the farm.

“One of the prisoners was working in the vegetable farm whilst the other was working at the piggery when they escaped,” he explained.

The PRO noted that his outfit was doing everything possible to re-arrest the hoodlums from their hideouts.

“Our men are conducting thorough search in vehicles that ply the road leading to the Amanfrom Prisons and the nearby towns.

“We are doing that in order to prevent the escapees from fleeing the area with the aid of a vehicle,” L/Cpl Owusu pointed out.

He added that other officers were seriously combing Amanfrom and the adjoining towns in an attempt to recapture the runaway prisoners.

He urged the public not to panic, stressing that the prison officers were determined to re-arrest the escapees to face the law.

Owusu also admonished the media to remain calm; assuring that his outfit would readily brief them about the latest on the issue.
