Finance Minister Must Openly Explain Why The Cedi Is Appreciating - Atik Mohammed

Aspiring General Secretary of the People's National Convention (PNC) Atik Mohammed wants the Finance Minister Seth Tekper to officially offer clarifications on the current appreciation of the cedi.

Speaking to host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Kokrokoo, Atik Mohammed called on Hon. Seth Tekper and his Ministry to help the public understand the source of the strength of the cedi.

The Minister's clarifications, he believed, would help investors to build confidence in the economy.

He however was doubtful the cedi's appreciation can be sustained over time though there's some amount of stability.

“With what happened at Talensi, I am told that the IMF is beginning to have second thoughts about their passing of the economy as being well and that government is beginning to be austere in its expenditure and so on. So I plead with them to let us know how come the cedi is becoming stable and even gaining more strength against the major currencies.”

Chief Executive of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors, Senyo Hosi hinted in an interview on Kokrokoo that fuel prices will from Thursday 16th July go down because there has been an improvement in the cedi as against the major currencies.

This notwithstanding, Atik Mohammed wants the Finance Ministry to "come and help us understand the source of this appreciation or strength so that going forward, we can be sure that it will work should we use this. And that it’s not going to be a nine-day wonder.”
