A 23-year-old musician, his producer and a 21-year-old Senior High School (SHS) student have been arrested by the Tamale police for possessing three mini sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
Suspect Kelvin Collins Johnson and his 24-year-old producer and songwriter, Joseph Akobra, and Mumuni Hamza were arrested upon a tipoff at House Number Extension 10 at Sagnarigu, a suburb of the Sagnarigu District of the Northern Region.
The three, it was gathered, had converged in the house of a colleague whose name was only given as Faisal, currently at large, for a wee smoking competition and had barely begun when the police arrived.
According to the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, one A.D.O Adogoba Newton with the Metropolitan Fire Station reported the presence of the suspects in the neighbourhood to the police.
He disclosed that he believed they were up to something evil and therefore sought the assistance of the police to determine their real mission.
Police, he indicated, proceeded to the scene but the suspects, on spotting them, tried to escape but were pursued and arrested by armed police who were dispatched to Sagnarigu.
Three others, including the owner of the room which was to be used for the supposed smoking competition, managed to escape and are currently being sought by the police to assist in investigations.
A search conducted in the room revealed three mini sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, several wraps of cannabis, partially smoked wraps, a whitish powdery substance suspected to be cocaine, 41 assorted SIM cards, two HP laptops, and two modems.
The suspects in their caution statements claimed the dried leaves belonged to Faisal, indicating that they were only in Tamale on a visit and to seek some musical collaboration and had nothing to do with the wee.
The three were arraigned before the Tamale District Magistrate Court II presided over by Anthony Essah and were remanded into prison custody to reappear on July 20, 2015.
Meanwhile police have hinted that they are intensifying efforts to apprehend three other suspects, including Faisal, said to be on the run.
