Eleven Prosecuted For Indiscriminate Refuse Dumping

Eleven persons arrested by a joint task force of the La-Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA) and the Madina Police on Tuesday night, have been arraigned at the Madina Magistrate Court.

They were arrested for sneaking to dump refuse on the Madina/Aburi Highway around 11.30p.m.

Mr Lambert Kwara, the Prosecuting Officer at the Assembly, told the court presided over by Her Worship Mrs. Priscilla Dapaa Mireku, that at about 11.30 pm on July 14, the task force arrested the 11 accused persons for dumping refuse indiscriminately on the shoulders and pavements of the Aburi-Madina Highway.

Mr Kwara said it was an illegal activity causing health hazard and nuisance to the general public.

The court charged the accused persons under "Section One, sub-sections one and two of the Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA) Bye-Law of 2013", which indicate that dumping of refuse at an authorized place was an offence.

Seven of them pleaded guilty, and were each fined ¢72, while the other four who pleaded guilty with explanation, were each granted bail in the sum of 1,000 Ghana Cedis with sureties, to make their next appearance on August 5.
