American-Based Fraudster Grabbed

The Odorkor police in Accra have arrested a Ghanaian based in the United States of America for allegedly defrauding his victim to the tune of $25,000.

Frank Owusu Acheampong, 44, allegedly presented a fake Bank of America cheque to the unsuspected victim under the guise of purchasing from him (victim) a Toyota Tundra vehicle.

After collecting the car from, the suspect allegedly used it as barter to collect building materials from a friend before going into hiding.

He was however, arrested in Kumasi on July 17, 2015 when he was spotted and the matter was reported to the police.

The suspect, who is believed to have also defrauded other victims in Kumasi, was being wanted by the police, according to reports.

Confirming the arrest to DAILY GUIDE, Chief Superintendent Abraham Acquaye, Odorkor District Commander, said the Toyota Tundra pick-up was sent to the victim for use by his elder sister who also lives in America.

The victim narrated that he decided to sell the vehicle with the consent of his sister after realizing that he could not use it.

Suspect Acheampong, who spotted the vehicle being offered for sale, expressed interest and offered to pay for the vehicle.

He then gave two separate Bank of America cheque leaflets with face values of $15,000 and $10,000 respectively, to the victim to send to the sister abroad for cashing.

After collecting the vehicle, Acheampong went into hiding, according to the commander.

When the victim sent the two cheque leaflets to the sister in America, the bank authorities stated that those accounts never existed and that the cheques issued were fake.

A report was then lodged at the odorkor police station for investigations.

While investigations were going on, the police spotted the vehicle being used by one Brown and arrested him.

The said Mr Brown, upon interrogations, told the police that Acheampong gave the vehicle to him in exchange for building materials.

On July 17, 2015, the police had information that Acheampong was spotted in Kumasi and was subsequently grabbed for questioning.

As at press time yesterday, he was in custody assisting in investigations.
