Joseph Bentil Ani popularly known in showbiz as Uncle Chester has confessed he disagrees with the US Supreme Court’s decision on same-sex marriage.
“I am not in agreement with same sex marriage… and I can’t understand transgender either. I am wondering if it is actually very necessary,” he said in an interview on TV3 Wednesday morning.
“It’s just my viewpoint.”
The US Supreme Court on Friday, June 26 ruled that same-sex marriage is a legal right across the United States.
The plaintiffs asked “for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right,” Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote.
The ruling brings to an end more than a decade of bitter legal battles.
President Obama, who was excited about the development said it was intriguing to know that now, love can be celebrated.
“Our nation was founded on a bedrock principle: that we are all created equal,” he said in a statement shortly after the ruling.
“This ruling is a victory for America,” he said. “This decision affirms what millions of Americans already believe in their hearts. When all Americans are treated as equal, we are all more free.”
But Chester said he thinks the institution of marriage is more sacred and should be kept the way it is between a man and a woman.
“The institution of marriage is sacred… I don’t get it,” he said with concern. “Maybe I don’t understand the reasons for it.”
He, however, said he believes there is the need for a conversation on homosexuality in Ghana.
“I think there should be some debate about it… some people are born like that.”
