A unique wreath-laying ceremony took place at the Asomdwee Park in Accra yesterday to commemorate the 3rd anniversary of the death of Prof. J. E.A. Mills.
The Vice-President, Mr Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, led the solemn and brief event, which was also to open the park for viewing by the general public.
It was unique in the sense that only one wreath – a large one – was laid on behalf of the government of Ghana, friends and appointees.
Mr Amissah-Arthur, supported by the Chief of Staff, Mr Julius Debrah, and other former appointees of the former President, carried the huge wreath and laid it on the tomb
It was not an event for speeches.
President Mills died at the 37 Military Hospital on July 24, 2012.
The man Mills
Prof. Mills won the 2008 presidential elections on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), defeating the New Patriotic Party's candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the run-off.
Prof. Mills was a native of Ekumfi Otuam in the Central Region.
He was born at Tarkwa on July 21, 1944, and was educated at Achimota School and the University of Ghana, Legon.
The late President earned a Ph.D in Law at the age of 27 from the London University's School of Oriental and African Studies after completing his doctoral thesis in the area of taxation and economic development.
He had a long teaching experience at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ghana before becoming the Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service.
