(VIDEO) June 3rd Fire & Flood Victims Supported With Proceeds From Despite Disaster Relief Fund

As promised, surviving victims of the June 3, 2015 flood-fire disaster have received support in the form of cash and other material donations from the Chief Executive Officer of the Despite Group of Companies, Dr. Osei Kwame (Despite) and Chief Executive Officer of Special Investments Ltd, Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong.

The two businessmen set aside a ‘Despite Disaster Relief Fund’ with a seed money of 100,000.00 Ghana Cedis to be given to victims of the twin flood and fire June 3rd disaster.

Individuals, who willingly donated towards the fund, raised an astonishing amount before the donation was made. In all, over GHC 220,000 was raised.

Flooding, resulting from torrential rains, brought Accra to its knees on June 3, 2015, with the attendant unimaginable loss of lives and destruction of properties. About 152 people were killed at the GOIL fuel station, near the GCB Bank Towers building that exploded during the rainfall.

Many of the victims of the filling station inferno were among others who had sought shelter there to escape the flood waters from the overflowing Odaw River and uncovered drains.

Surviving victims treated at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, 37 Military Hospital, Police Hospital and Ridge Hospital were each given an amount of ₵1,400, and given products such as ‘This Way’ Chocolate Drink, Special Ice mineral water and African wax print fabrics.

Peace FM’s Mr. Obeng Menu, Kwadwo Asante and Mawuse Woka were handlers of the fund and visited each hospital to do the donation on behalf of the company. The Principal Nursing Officer, Surgical Ward, Ridge Hospital, Ms Charlotte Asante, who received the donation on behalf of the facility was so thankful for the gesture shown.

“We thank ‘Despite’ and Mr. Ofori Sarpong for what they have done. We are so grateful for what they have done because when such issues happen, it becomes difficult to get people to help. But put that aside and came to the aide of the victims”, she said.

One surviving victim at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital gave touching remarks as he thanked the group for coming to his aide. “I thank God that you have remembered us in this time of need. God bless you, give you long lives and grant your heart desires. This is all I have to say”, he said.
