Managing Editor for the Daily Searchlight newspaper, Ken Kuranchie, has admonished Ghanaians not to resort to guns and other offensive weapons to oust the president from power, but rather use their thumbs.  

He says Ghana’s democracy has attracted several commendations from respected leaders across the world and so things that will dent this achievement must not be countenanced.

He makes this call in connection with the 36 year old man, who has been arrested for possessing a loaded gun in President Mahama’s church, the Ringway Gospel Centre branch of the Assemblies of God Church in Accra. He was caught by security operatives on guard.

Apart from President Mahama and his family, key government officials like the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Georgina Theodora Woode attend the Ringway Gospel Centre branch of the Assemblies of God Church in Accra.

Speaking on TOP FM’s morning show “Yen Nnsem Pa” hosted by Ekourba Gyasi on Monday, Ken Kuranchie said although investigations are yet to reveal the motive behind the man’s decision to take a gun to the church, the solution to dealing with the non-performing president is not through the gun but rather through an election.

He said no matter how bad the President is as the leader of the country, taking his life will not solve the problems.

“This is dangerous for our democracy, we have suffered a lot for the democracy we are all enjoying today,” he said. “I don’t think this is something that we should all encourage,” he added.

Lawyer Owusu Agyemang, former Brong Ahafo Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) added that “we don’t take guns to church, it is Bible we should all carry to church.”

He said this is a disturbing phenomenon that must be tackled immediately before it escalates.

“Why will someone take a gun to the church the President and other important dignitaries worship, this is the first time in the fourth republic am hearing this and so it must be tackled now, he said.”

He added that assuming without admitting that the culprit wanted to eliminate the President that will not make any party come to power automatically until the country goes into another presidential elections.
