Scotty Batie, a Hulbert Fifth grade Teacher in the United States of America, also the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Rise-UP Inc. a non-profit organization, on Tuesday, performed ground breaking ceremony to construct a three-unit classroom block with toilets, bathrooms and offices at Govinakrom, a farming community near Teacher Mante in the Eastern region of Ghana in West Africa.
The project expected to be completed by the end of 2015 would cost GH¢80,000.00. The completion of the project would help fix infrastructural deficit bedeviling the Govinakrom D/A primary school.
Currently, pupils in Govinakrom D/A primary School study in a dilapidated pavilion with bamboo erected iron sheet roof and an abandoned church building with bare floor.
Scotty Batie, the American teacher, stated that "I was shocked to see the poor condition of the limited infrastructure in Govinakrom when a friend took me there, it is incredible and unfortunate for children to learn in such poor conditions, hence, I decided to support by building the three classroom block with auxiliary facilities.”
He said “education is the only panacea to poverty in Africa,” therefore pledged Rise Up’s continued support to improve delivery of quality education in Africa.
The headmaster of Govinakrom D/A School, Daniel Sosi, stated that the current condition of the school is impeding on delivery of quality education in the area.
He added that school authorities are compelled to close the school whenever it’s about to rain, therefore, the project when completed would eliminate this problem.
Rise Up Inc. also donated library books, pens, pencils, erasers and other teaching and learning materials to the school.
The chief of Govinakrom, Barima Govina Kokuvi, is envisaging quality education delivery when the project is completed. He, however, appealed for extension of electricity to the community to improve both education and economic activities.
