2 Killed In Students Riot

Two persons are reported dead while dozens have been injured following a riot by students of the Salaga T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School in the Northern Region on Thursday morning to demand the removal of their headmaster.

The dead persons, who Daily Guide has confirmed are not students, were hit by stray bullets fired by a combined team of armed police and military personnel who tried to disperse the rampaging students.

According to eyewitnesses, one of the deceased persons – a farmer from a neighbouring village – was in Salaga to withdraw money from the Credit Union when he met his untimely death.

It has also been established that the school’s boys’ dormitory and the dining hall were not spared the wrath of the students, as they set those facilities ablaze.
It took several hours for personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service to douse the inferno which was spreading to other structures on the campus.
The Northern Regional Police Spokesperson, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, confirmed the riot to DAILY GUIDE but was unable to give the exact number of injured persons or those killed.

According to him, reinforcement had already been dispatched to Salaga to help contain the escalating situation.

Meanwhile, residents are complaining of being brutalised by security personnel who suspect they are shielding the rowdy students from being arrested.
According to a number of them who spoke to this paper, the conduct of the security personnel had further heightened the tension in the town.

Six of the students who were arrested on Wednesday, Daily Guide gathered, are still in police detention and it is unclear when they would be arraigned before court.
