Students of Nalerigu Senior High School (NASS) in the Northern Region last Saturday evening went on riot, destroying valuable properties of the school, including school cars, the headmaster’s bungalow, ICT centre and the girls’ dormitory, all for not being allowed to organise entertainment to mark the end of the term, otherwise known as closing jams.
The students attacked the headmaster at his bungalow, ransacked the house and destroyed four vehicles belonging to the school by smashing the windscreens.
The rampaging students also broke into the Information Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory and stole laptops and desktops.
Some properties, including phones belonging to the headmaster, were stolen from his residence.
The girls’ dormitory was attacked because the girls refused to co-operate with them to attack the headmaster.
The headmaster, however, escaped unhurt as he ran out of the bungalow when the students were approaching and was whisked away on a motorbike to safety by one of the teachers.
The headmaster of NASS, Mr Adam Martin Chinto, confirmed the sad incident to The Finder and said he was so devastated by the incidence that he cannot comment further.
According to information, the leadership of the students went to the headmaster to seek permission to organise jams on Saturday to mark the end of the term, but their request was turned down.
The students, angered by the headmaster’s refusal, went back to their dormitories, cut off electricity supply to the school, attacked the headmaster and vandalised other valuable properties.
According to one of the tutors of the school, the students have not been able to organise entertainment events for the past two terms because their gadgets were not functioning.
The students approached the headmaster for assistance to purchase gadgets for entertainment and the headmaster assisted them with GH¢6,000 to purchase the items.
It was, therefore, surprising that the students would exhibit such uncouth behaviour towards somebody who had assisted them.
Meanwhile, one student is alleged to be in police custody as he was caught with one of the desktop computers belonging to the school.
