The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru, has strongly condemned the recent spate of riots in secondary schools in the region.
Alhaji Limuna made this known in Gambaga during the final funeral rites of the late Imam of Mamprugu Kingdom, Imam Muhammad Mesuna Yahaya.
He stressed that parents and guardians must instil discipline in their children throughout the stages of education.
The Regional Minister added that parents and guardians play a significant role in child upbringing and, therefore, should not over-rely on schools to discipline their kids for them.
“Raising responsible children is a collective responsibility of all, so do not leave disciplinary roles to teachers alone but also try to discipline them at home as well, to complement what the teachers are doing in the schools,” he noted.
Alhaji Limuna’s public condemnation and outburst comes in the wake of the spate of rioting by students of senior high schools in Salaga, Walewale, Karaga, and the most recent incident occurring at Nalerigu SHS.
Briefing The Finder on the disturbances, the Northern Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service, Alhaji Haruna Cambodia, bemoaned the rate of moral decadence in second-cycle institutions across the region, describing the situation as unacceptable. He warned that serious punitive measures would be taken against radical students.
Alhaji Haruna urged school authorities to pay particular attention to the schools’ codes of conduct, and also called on opinion leaders, chiefs and religious leaders to play a leading role in moral uprightness in the society as a whole.
The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usmanu Nuhu Sharabutu, who led the prayers, described the late Imam Mesuna as an honest and dedicated Imam who had the love of Allah and humanity at heart.
He said the deceased placed Islam first before any other thing, which, he said, made him the man who loved people for Allah’s sake, regardless of their ethnic or religious background.
He also called on the people to emulate him and to embrace peace in all their social interactions, which is the watch word of Islam.
Dagbon Kingdom was represented by a powerful royal delegation led by the Gulkpenaa, the Sagnarinaa, and the Nyankpallana, among others.
The Chief of Staff, Mr Julius Debrah, led the government delegation, which included the Northern Regional Minister, who is a father-in-law to the late Imam, Haruna Iddrisu, Inusah Fuseini, District and Metropolitan Chief Executives, as well as the leadership of the NDC in the region, led by the chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka.
The New Patriotic Party was also represented by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Hajia Alima Mahama, Mr Bugri Naabu and other party functionaries.
The Chief of Staff, on behalf of the President, donated 500 bags of cement to the family to help complete a mosque which the late Imam started and had wished to complete before crossing over to eternity.
