Jamal Denies Planning Violence At Akwatia

Mr. Baba Jamal, the Eastern Regional Deputy Minister, has denied planning to disrupt the the re-run of parliamentary election in six polling stations at Akwatia Constituency, on August 18. He said there was no iota of truth in stories being peddled by his political opponents that he was planning to bring "macho" men to cause confusion during the re-run. Mr Jamal was speaking at the launch of the National Mosquito Control Programme in the Kwaebibirem District, at Akwatia. He asked the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stop its campaign of lies and be ready to accept defeat in the election since he would wrest the seat. Mr Jamal asked the people of Akwatia to disabuse their minds that he and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would cause confusion, insecurity and violence in the area. He called for an end to what he described as "unnecessary tension" so that voters in the six polling stations would be able to vote peacefully. The chief of Akwatia, Osabarima Kofi Boateng III cautioned people who would take the laws into their own hands and disturb the peace of the town, adding that he would not tolerate any indiscipline nor sit down unconcerned for anyone to create disorder in the community. Mr Jamal is contesting the Akwatia seat on the ticket of the NDC with Dr Kofi Asare of the NPP, Mr Samuel Agyei of the Convention Peoples' Party (CPP) and two Independent candidates, Mr Basil Ahiable and Mr Samuel Abrokwah.
