Lovers Arrested For Dumping Baby In Public Toilet

A 23-year-old apprentice seamstress at Sawua in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region, Esther Duah, together with her boyfriend, popularly called Akwasi Hit, have been arrested by the Asokwa Police in Kumasi for dumping their day-old baby girl in a public KVIP at Sawua.

The two suspects are currently in the custody of the Asokwa Police pending thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the matter while the baby is on admission at the Mother and Babies Unit of the Kumasi South Hospital, where she is under close monitoring.

A Staff Midwife at the Sawua Health Centre, Mrs Rita Duncan said that the incident occurred last Monday.

According to her, the baby, who had the umbilical cord still not cut, was found by a resident of the town who was attending to nature's call at the KVIP of the Sawua D/A Primary School.

The midwife said the concerned resident then rushed to the town and mobilised her colleagues, who helped to retrieve the baby from the latrine by first breaking the concrete slabs.

She said the mother of the baby, who had for the entire period of the pregnancy vehemently denied being pregnant, would only admit to abandoning the baby in the toilet after the assemblyman of the town threatened to cause her arrest.

She claimed that she was not aware that it was a baby since she only experienced that something had dropped from her into the toilet while she was attending to nature's call.
