George Asamaney, counsel for Johnson Kombian, a convicted jail breaker, yesterday addressed the seven-member panel of jurors at an Accra Fast Track High Court where Kombian is on trial for the alleged murder of two police officers at the Nakpanduri Scarp in the Northern Region.
Counsel told the court presided over by Justice Habib Logoh that the prosecution had failed to pin his client to the offence for which he was charged.
According to him, the accused was not guilty of the offence of murder, adding that the evidence of the prosecution witnesses did not conclusively point to the guilt of his client.
In addition, he said some of the witnesses did not give very consistent evidence and noted that the prosecution was unable to prove that it was Kombian who murdered the police officers.
The case was adjourned to today.
The accused person denied the charges levelled against him in his evidence, saying that he did not have anything to do with the deaths of the police officers – Constables Prince Agyare and Owusu Frimpong – and that he did not shoot the surviving police officer, Constable Osei Bonsu.
Kombian told the court that he was not even in Ghana on November 17, 2010, the day the police officers were killed, claiming that he was in Togo and could not have been the one who shot the officers.
He also complained of police brutality and the burning of his house by the police when they were looking for him.
He denied that any court had ever convicted him of robbery and challenged anybody who has evidence to that effect to prove it, adding that he had nothing against the police officers to want to kill them.
If convicted Kombian could face up to life imprisonment.
