Homowo In Limbo: Court Stops Ga Mantse, Ayi Bonte, Others...From Procession, Sprinkling Kpoikpoi

An Accra High Court has restrained Mr. George Tackie Abia a.k.a Boni Nii Tackie Adama Latse II, the purported Ga Mantse, Nii Yaote Oto-Ga II, Thomas Okine a.k.a Nii Ayi Bonte of Gbese, and some 14 others from celebrating the Homowo festivities and sprinkling the traditional Kpoikpoi during this year’s Ga Homowo celebration.

This came up when the Plaintiffs who are the legitimate Kingmakers of the Ga Paramount Stool Dsaase filed a writ at the High Court challenging the capacity of Nii Tackie Adama Latse II.

In an Affidavit in support of the application for the injunction, Nii Akropong IV, Head of Abola Piam Royal House and Head of Akropong Division indicated that the Defendants, George Tackie-Abia and 16 others are planning to go ahead with the celebration of the Homowo Festival.

“That the intended acts of the Defendants/Respondents would not only be prejudicial to the determination of the substantive suit and undermine the authority of the court but would also cause chaos and likely result in bloody clashes between factions of both sides,” the affidavit indicated.

The affidavit stated that there are enough information that the Defendants have ignored all advice from respected and well-meaning natives of Ga and are hell-bent on getting the 1st Defendant/Respondent to sprinkle the traditional “Kpoipkoi” at Ga Mashie, pour libation at Ga Mashie, Abola Stool House, lead a procession to enter the Stool House at Abola during the period of Homowo and to hold Stool House conferences at the Ga Traditional Council during the Homowo Festival period purportedly in celebration of the Homowo.

Even though the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, has assured the purported Ga Mantse and his accomplices in a publication in the Ghanaian Times newspaper, of his utmost support by using his position as the Chairman of the Regional Security Council (RESEC) to ensure maximum security during the Homowo celebrations, the legitimate Kingmaker of Ga Dsaase Paramount Stool, Nii Tetteh Kwei II is urging him (Afotey Agbo) to rather channel his energy and influence to ensure that the injunction placed on NiiTackie Adama Latse II and others is enforced.

According to Nii Tetteh Kwei II, the ultimate security and peace that AfoteyAgbo can ensure using his political powers, during the Homowo celebration is for him to call AdamaLatse and his people to order and lead them to respect the decision and order of the Court.

It could be recalled that the accredited Kingmakers, elders and nominal heads of the Ga Paramount Royal Stool of the Ga State led by Nii Dr. Tetteh Kwei II, have installed a new Ga Mantse under the stool name King Dr. Tackie Teiko Tsuru II. This installation has received some attacks with the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbowho was believed to have been assuming the traditional and customary position of Ga Dzaase (Kingmakers), declared the new installation as illegitimate.

His comments came when he decided to defend the position of AdamaLatse, who has now been declared as an alien to the Stool. The Kingmakers expressed disgust at Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo for describing the installation of the new chief, Dr. Kelvin TackieAbia under the Stool name King Dr TackieTeikoTsuru II by the Ga Dzasetse, Nii Tetteh Kwei II as fictitious and an attempt to disturb the peace of the Ga community.

They however threw a word of caution to him to refrain from interfering into the Ga Chieftaincy matters and denied the contention held by AfoteyAgbo that the installation of a new Mantse was wrong. The kingmakers also issued a stern warning to Mr. George Tackie-Abiaa.k.a Boni Nii Tackie Adama Latse II to stop parading himself as Ga Mantse.

However, with the Homowo celebration approaching, accredited Kingmakers, elders and nominal heads of the Ga Paramount Royal Stool of the Ga State, led by Nii Dr. Tetteh Kwei II, haven resolved to ensure that the sprinkling of the traditional Kpokploi is not done by any illegitimate traditional head, filed a suit in Court praying the court to restrain such people from performing that customary responsibility.
