We Would Have Loved To See The Doctors Resign - Sam George

Presidential staffer, Samuel George Nettey is calling on government to go beyond freezing the salaries of striking doctors and eject them from their bungalows.

According to him, a doctor on strike cannot stay in a highly subsidized building at the expense of tax payers. “They [doctors] should be moved out of their bungalows for those ready to work to occupy them” he stressed.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) at an emergency meeting at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra voted to remain on strike. 213 doctors vote for and 148 voted against the decision but they agreed not to resign en masse as threatened by their leadership over the absence of conditions of service.

But speaking on Asempa FM on Friday, Sam George expressed shock at the doctors’ decision not to resign. “So the doctors actually hold their jobs in high esteem in spite of threats to resign en masse? We would have loved to see them pull through their threat” he scoffed.

The presidential staffer said the striking doctors would have been flogged by their won relatives in other jurisdiction due to the “high falutin” [pompous] stance taken. “The doctors must know that the life of Ghanaians is not like dolls to be joked with. I commend those who voted against the decision”.

Sam George urged the doctors to call off their strike and return to the negotiation table with government if they intend to keep their jobs. “If the doctors want to work, they should call off the strike and return to the negotiating table,” he added.
